Heather Urquhart and Joe Samuel
Heather trained in Physical Theatre and has studied improvisation at Chicago’s I.O theatre. She improvises with the Olivier Award-winning Showstopper! The Improvised Musical and is a director and performer with The Maydays, who have headlined Dublin and Barcelona Improv Festivals, played at the Del Close marathon in New York and have monthly residencies in Brighton and London. Her duo improv show ‘Ten Thousand Million Love Stories’ (with Jules Munns) has also toured extensively most recently to Texas, Montreal and Karachi. Heather was awarded best female performer in the Brighton Fringe Festival 2013 and winner of the Argus Angel Award for artistic excellence for new musical The Opinion Makers in 2014. She is a guest vocalist with the mercury music prize nominated Electric Soft Parade and sings with Doo-wop punk trio New York Dollies. She has co-written a book on the subject of musical improvisation called ‘Sing it!’ which has a series of associated podcasts.
Joe Samuel is a classically trained pianist and violinist having studied music at Royal Holloway University of London. He has been a professional musician for 15 years, playing in a variety of successful bands on both his electric violin and on keyboard. He teaches piano, theory, harmony, composition and music technology ‘A’ level as well as teaching musical improvisation and comedy. Joe Samuel is the musical director of ‘The Maydays’ improvisation group as well as being guest musical director for a number of other improvisation projects in Brighton and London. Joe has performed with a vast array of improv troupes and individuals worldwide having been the musical director of the Barcelona, Finland, Athens and Maydays own UK Improv Festivals. Last year he performed with Colin Mochrie (Whose Line is it Anyway) at the Edinburgh Festival. His collaboration with Heather Urquhart has lead to the formation of ‘Open Your Mouth and Sing’ that has produced 1 website, 1 book, countless workshops and a number of bizarre experiments in the world of musical improvisation.
